Jamaica Gleaner Letters
published: Tuesday | August 12, 2003

Time to put petty things aside and work together
THE EDITOR, Sir: I AM writing in regard to the uproar being created over the statue at Emancipation Park. I think many of us Jamaicans are being quite hypocritical on this matter.

CXC rankings
THE EDITOR, Sir: I have read with great interest the rankings done by Professor Vasciannie, based on the 2002 CXC examinations - The Gleaner, August 2003.

'Nothing wrong with nude statues
THE EDITOR, Sir: Why do Jamaican people find a fault in every thing? I was just watching the 7 p.m. news on TVJ only to hear more about the controversial nude statue at the entrance to Emancipation Park.

Inspiring art
THE EDITOR, Sir: The first time I passed Emancipation Park and saw the figures I burst out laughing. The nudity does not bother me. To me they looked like they were still in chains - the arms firmly at their sides.

Still in 'chains'
THE EDITOR, Sir: IT IS quite clear from the negative comments on "Redemption Song", the sculpture created by Laura Facey Cooper, that a substantial percentage of Jamaicans have not emancipated themselves.

Art could be a godsend
THE EDITOR, Sir: VICTORIAN PRUDERY has negated art at the entrance of Emancipation Park.

The projective test
THE EDITOR, Sir: EVERY FEW weeks in the on-going dialectical process of cultural development, our society lurches towards the edge.

The Denbigh Show
THE EDITOR, Sir: I THINK a step the Government should take to promote farming in this country is to have the annual Denbigh Show in a different parish every year...

Welcome news
THE EDITOR, Sir: THE RECENT news that the National Housing Trust plans to build a four-storey parking lot on prime land it owns, is welcome.

Water lock-offs
THE EDITOR, Sir: THIS IS an open letter to the National Water Commission...

Not appropriate
THE EDITOR, Sir: I JUST found out about the statue at Emancipation Park. I would like to unabashedly state my concern.

The naked truth
THE EDITOR, Sir: In The Gleaner dated Saturday, August 9, and under the caption "Continuing controversy over statues", there is a photograph of the controversial statues.

Boonoonoonoos welcome
THE EDITOR, Sir: IT'S VERY heart-warming to read about the Boonoonoonoos welcome the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley received on her return to Jamaica.
