Time to put petty things aside and work together
published: Tuesday | August 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM writing in regard to the uproar being created over the statue at Emancipation Park. I think many of us Jamaicans are being quite hypocritical on this matter.

Art is art and should be regarded as such. We also need to be considerate of the artist. Not many of us can produce such works and would not necessarily want it displayed for everyone to see and criticise, as it is a reflection of the artist's own soul. There are so many things in our society that are more disturbing than a statue should be.

Are we not taught that it was God/ Allah/ Jah/ Jehovah Who made us and that we can come to Him even when we're naked because He made us as we are and loves us as we are? And should we not be able, in the perfection and purity in which He made us, to come before Him as Adam and Eve did? Yes, we sin and are now "less" than how God made us and intended us to be, but He loves us just as much now as He did before we sinned. If we cannot go to God in our nakedness then who can we go to?

And what is so wrong with two people (who are not even touching, mind you) standing together in unity facing their Creator? Maybe if all of us united as one, without all the false coverings we so readily use with God and each other, presented ourselves in humility to our Creator, we could find a way to put these little insignificant things aside and work together on bringing Jamaica back to the land it once was, the land that many still remember and dream about, Jamaica land we love.

I am, etc.,
