By Petulia Clarke, Staff ReporterTHE NATIONAL Water Commission (NWC) and the Ministry of Water and Housing have issued water-scarcity warnings and conservation directives, as the extensive dry season continues to affect water supply.
Donald Buchanan, Minister of Water and Housing, has called on citizens to increase their water conservation efforts and ensure that there is little or no water wastage in their households, as this will assist in reducing the need to implement further water restrictions and help to alleviate water problems in several areas.
Customers now affected either have no piped water, or have low water pressure from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily.
Persons are being encouraged to use innovative alternatives such as recycling water when washing motor vehicles or watering their lawns or gardens.
NO DROUGHT DIRECTIVE
The Meteorological Service is, however, issuing no drought directive.
Evan Thompson, head of the weather branch at the Met Service, said that dry conditions with afternoon showers are normal at this time of the year, and that the Met Service is compiling data to, by next week, analyse whether it is necessary to declare official drought conditions.
But, the ministry has taken steps to truck water to the several areas throughout the island which have been experiencing severe water problems.
