Sebastien bowls Windwards towards victory over Jamaica
published: Monday | August 18, 2003

Marshall...top-scored for Jamaica.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:

CAPTAIN LIAM Sebastien completed a 10-wicket match haul and bowled the Windward Islands into a winning position against Jamaica on the second day of their TCL Group Under-19 Challenge match at Wales yesterday.

After snatching a first innings lead, the Windwards bowled out Jamaica for 137 in their second innings, and moved to within 55 runs of victory at stumps when they closed at a strong 73 for one in the Group B match.

Off-spinner Sebastien wrecked the Jamaica second innings with five for 23 off 16 overs with seven maidens, to complement his first innings haul of five for 31.

From an overnight 112 for eight, replying to Jamaica's first innings 124, the Windwards surpassed the target to reach 134 all out.

Overnight batsmen Earvin Fredericks (12) and Ash Edwards (4), along with number 11 batsman Jean Paul, with four not out, dragged the Windwards into a 10-run first innings advantage. Left-arm pacer Krishmar Santokie led the Jamaica bowling with three for 25 off 9.4 overs, while leg-spinners Gavin Wallace (2-18) and Alton Beckford (2-41), and off-spinner Howard Powell (2-22) shared six wickets.

POSITIVE 45-RUN OPENING STAND

Sebastien, with support from pacers Mervin Matthews (3-23) and Fredericks (2-21), then stifled Jamaica's second innings, although Xavier Marshall and Simon Jackson had given them a positive 45-run opening stand.

Sebastien dislodged Jackson (11) caught behind and trapped Andre Hall leg before wicket second ball, as the number three batsman played across the line and completed a pair in the game.

Marshall, who helped the West Indies win the 2000 Costcutter Under-15 World Cup in England, top-scored with 45, including six boundaries, and Chadwick Walton (20) and Howard Powell (23) staged some middle-order resistance.
