Too much carnage on our roads
published: Monday | September 1, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MORE CARNAGE on the roads! The story on the tragic accident on the Mount Rosser Road is a cause of great concern as it comes on the heels of another tragic accident last Monday along the Old Harbour Road which also involved a bus that attempted to overtake a line of traffic at a most indiscriminate and critical point.

Whenever these reckless and dangerous and careless drivers are carrying a busload of passengers, every single passenger has the right and the obligation to insist that these drivers discharge their obligations to observe the rules of the road and deposit their passengers at their destinations "in one piece". But many passengers (especially those in Public Passenger Vehicles) are too concerned with reaching their destination in the shortest possible time to be overly concerned with the reckless and careless and dangerous driving tactics of the resident "Driva". And others who may be uncomfortable and hanging on to the edge of their seats with whitened knuckles at every indiscriminate overtake and instances of excessive speed are too afraid of the caustic responses that complaints may elicit from fellow passengers or the 'Driva' and his 'Conducta'.

Yet something must be done, and now is the opportune time. Our citizens are literally being killed by these "vehicles of death" as drivers who view themselves as masters of the road ply their weapon of choice - a bus, car, truck - with indiscriminate disregard for life or limb.

It seems that placing massive fines on the books are not the way forward - perchance enforcement of these said fines could prove more useful. Help!

I am, etc.,
