The JAAA needs to say why
published: Wednesday | September 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I THINK the local media need to spend some time investigating and airing the reasons that Usain Bolt did not participate in the recent World Championships in Paris, France. To the best of my knowledge, Jamaica's participation in these kinds of events is funded by Jamaican taxpayers and corporate sponsors. We cannot afford to pay for someone to simply take a visit to Paris, regardless of who that person is.

The "explanation" provided in The Gleaner sport report of September 2, 2003, that he did not run because he did not want to, is unacceptable.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) needs to think of the next time it goes to corporate sponsors (including global brands!) seeking money! Think about the big picture here.

I am, etc.,
