CANTERBURY, England, CMC:
JAMAICAN PACER Franklyn Rose made a solid debut for Surrey yesterday, leading the bowling on the opening day of their English County Championship match against Kent at the St. Lawrence Ground.
Rose, signed only this week as a replacement for Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq, captured 2-59 off 21 overs with seven maidens to be Surrey's most successful bowler on the day as Kent piled up 435 for five.
Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds played a superb innings of 121, after Michael Carberry and David Fulton had given Kent a sound 160-run opening stand.
Carberry (92) had a hundred in his sights when he was caught behind by Johnathon Batty off Rose, and Rose removed Fulton soon after in similar fashion soon after for 75. Mark Ealham was 80 not out at stumps.
Rose, who was dropped from the Jamaica team during the 2003 Carib Beer Series after a couple of moderate performances, last represented the West Indies during their 2000 tour of England.
