Clarendon hunt d'Cup victory
published: Monday | September 8, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

FORMER CHAMPIONS Clarendon College will start their campaign in the 2003 ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup rural schoolboy football competition this afternoon when they take on Lennon in one of two games scheduled in Zone H.

Denbigh and Central High will meet in the other game, both scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

Defending champions Rusea's high kicked off the season on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Grange Hill in a Zone B game that was played at Jarrett Park. Jamie Ramsey scored the winner in the 73rd minute.

The competition will get into high gear by Wednesday when a total of 27 games are scheduled to be played over the 12 zones.

The Clarendon College and Lennon encounter will be the first in at least two seasons as Lennon contested Zone I in the past few years.

Clarendon College, winners of the competition on six occasions, the last coming in 1998, will be seeking a quick start to the competition and will be hoping to get off on a winning note today.

Clarendon finished second in the zone last season and advanced to the inter-zone round where they lost all three games. The coaching staff will be hoping the young players have learnt from their experiences and will advance further into the competition this season.

Lennon will be hoping the change of zones will be a good move for them as they have failed to advance past the first round for a number of years.

Denbigh and Central will find it difficult to advance from the zone as Glenmuir High is expected to dominate along with Clarendon.
