By Rasbert Turner, Gleaner WriterSPANISH TOWN:
THE LATEST reversible one-way traffic changes for the Spanish Town bypass an-nounced yesterday have now scheduled the evening run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The evening schedule was previously 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Additionally, access to Twickenham Park Road from the José Marti roundabout will also be restricted during this period. One-way traffic will now extend to the entrance to the Mandela Highway. Oxford Road, Burke Road and Twickenham Park Road will be restricted to motorists heading in an easterly direction in the evenings.
Motorists entering Spanish Town from Kingston will have to make a right turn on to Salt Pond Road or Port Henderson Road. Traffic will also be allowed to enter Twickenham Park Road from Michael Manley Drive. Traffic into Oxford Road from Morrison Avenue will also be restricted. Route taxis will now have to travel on Young Street to March Pen Road and into the taxi park. March Pen Road will be converted into a one-way from Spanish Town during this period.
Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses travelling from Kingston to Spanish Town will travel to the bus terminal at Lower Oxford Road from the bypass.
COMMUTERS COMPLAINING
Commuters using JUTC buses are complaining that the change along Burke Road, Spanish Town 6 to 8 a.m. is affecting them adversely.
They are contending that the number 22 and 21 buses that ply the downtown Kingston and Cross Roads to Spanish Town routes are not allowed to travel the full length of Burke Road as they are diverted by the police at White Church Street to join the general flow of easterly traffic going into Kingston. As a result, the passengers at the six bus stops from Burke Road to Greendale are left stranded or otherwise inconvenienced.
"It worked well on Monday as we were allowed to go through as were the orders of our superiors; however, this has changed since yesterday (Tuesday) and we cannot pick up these passengers and I believe it's a disservice to the travelling public who wish to use our buses," a JUTC worker said.
