Will republican status change anything?
published: Thursday | September 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with great interest and a bit of cynicism the front page story of Monday September 22. The Prime Minister telling his comrades and the rest of us who want to listen that he intends to ask the people of Jamaica to allow him and his party to change our constitution from the so-called Colonial Democracy to a Republican Constitution. I have a problem with whatever the PNP and the Prime Minister says. Be that as it may.

Let me ask the Prime Minister, is changing our mode or will the changing of our present mode of governance reduce the rampant murder rate and general lawlessness that is destroying the social and moral fabric of our country? Will this change reduce the economic chaos which results in mounting unemployment?

Will the law-abiding citizens stop cowering in fear asking ourselves when or how soon it will be our turn or your children's or loved ones turn to be brutally murdered for no good reason except that we are Jamaicans living in Jamaica?

Mr. Patterson, with all the hype about Highway 2000 and if you and your party change our present mode of governance to a Republic, history will not be kind to you because you will go down as the PM under whose watch this country has the dubious reputation as being the Murder Captial of the World, the highest taxation next to Israel who is perpetually at war with its Arab neighbours, the highest unemployment, the highest debt burden in the Caribbean mainly caused by corruption, ineptness and a people with no hope in sight.

Mr. Prime Minister, correct these ills before talking to the people of this beautiful island about becoming a Republic.

I am, etc.,
