Jamaica Society for the Blind seeks funds to repair vehicle
published: Friday | September 26, 2003

THE JAMAICA Society for the Blind's ability to carry out its programmes have been severely hampered, as the organisation's only vehicle has fallen into disrepair.

Since July 27, the society's sole means of transportation broke down and, upon examination, they were told that it needed an engine. They have since identified a second-hand engine for $130,000, but the dealer has consented to sell them the engine for $80,000.

Subsequently the society's president, Virginia Woods, wrote to a number of agencies requesting financial contributions to purchase the engine, however they have received no reply from any of them.

Executive director of the society, Virginia Woods, says it cannot afford to buy the engine as they are almost bankrupt.

"The society is almost bankrupt, we are just scrimping by on the little we have."

However, she pointed out that the society would appreciate any contribution made towards assisting them with acquiring the new vehicle.

The group says they have had to be asking persons to assist with transportation to take them to some events, while other activities have had to be put on hold as the vehicle was the only means of transportation for the staff and the equipment to get around the island.
