Garvey advance
published: Wednesday | October 1, 2003

By Paul Reid and Richard Bryan, Gleaner Writers

WESTERN BUREAU:

GARVEY MACEO Comprehensive became the first team to qualify for the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/ Sports Plus daCosta Cup rural schoolboys football competition yesterday after completing a 2-0 victory over nine time champions Vere Technical in a rescheduled game played at Brancourt.

Kemar Clare in the 37th minute and Clarendon junior footballer of the year Lennox Williamson in the 50th minute were the scorers for Garvey Maceo who increased their points tally to 19 points, four more than Old Harbour who can clinch the other place from Zone I with a win over Kemps Hill at the Soya Oval today.

Kemps Hill have a mathematical chance of advancing ahead of Old Harbour but must win big today and all their remaining games.

In addition to playing at home, Old Harbour also won the first round game 3-1 and will start favourites.

Former champions Clarendon College will be seeking to avenge their only loss of the season when they host Zone H leaders Glenmuir High in today's feature game as the return round continues.

Glenmuir won their first round game that was played at Brancourt on September 13 and today will be only the third meeting between the Clarendon schools since 1999 when they played to a 0-0 draw at Woodside in a quarterfinal game.

A win for Glenmuir would secure their place in the Inter-Zone however and they will start favorites despite a late surge by Clarendon that has seen them score 11 of their 14 goals in the last three games.

A win for the Dennis Hutchinson-coached team however would see them taking the lead on goal difference.
