CXC pass rates
published: Monday | October 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with utter disgust that children in Jamaican schools are being excluded from taking certain CXC examination papers. I was one such student excluded by a teacher at St Jago High School from taking Mathematics in 1986.

I had to therefore settle for Basic Mathematics which I passed with flying colours. The reason for my exclusion was simply based on the fact I was in a lower class (B4 to be precise) and maybe the fact that my family did not contribute huge sums to the school's funds. That did not stop me.

Today I am a Chartered Accountant and money is no obstacle.

Until Jamaicans shake off their Victorian backward attitude as their mother country England has done (and is continuing to do) then the outlook will continue to be DULL. Everyone deserves a fair go.

I am, etc.,

EDWARD FRASER
