Campion's statistics
published: Monday | October 13, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DR. RALPH Thompson's article of October 3, 2003, requires some comments in the interest of accuracy. When statistics are published nationally and perhaps internationally, it is important that they be checked to ensure their complete reliability.

Campion College headed Dr. Thompson's table in English and mathematics with 97.54 and 97.05 respectively. In reality, the performance was even better. The cohort quoted by Dr. Thompson was 204 students. Of the 204 who were entered for the CSEC, one was a Sixth Form student who entered only for chemistry in an attempt to gain a higher grade than that already obtained. Two migrated and another left the school at the end of the Christmas Term.

The results show that these three did not write any examination, hence our entire grade 11 (fifth form) consisted of 200 students thus making the cohort 200. Of the 200 students 199 passed English language, giving a percentage pass of 99.5. In mathematics, one student took the Basic Exam and gained a grade 1 pass. Of the 199 who sat the General Proficiency Exam, 198 passed.

If we take the cohort as 200, the percentage pass rate would be 99, if we use 199, the percentage is 99.5. At Campion, all students in Grade 11 must enter for English and mathematics.

I am, etc.,
