'Creepers' killing trees
published: Thursday | October 16, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECENTLY returned home to Jamaica where I was travelling as a tour member of the Friends of the Georgian Society of Jamaica. We had a wonderful trip to our beautiful island, we visited many interesting historical sites and were made most welcome by everyone that we met.

However, I was very concerned to see that in the western part of the island, i.e., in Hanover and Westmoreland, many many trees are being smothered by some sort of creeping vine which I had never noticed in the past. I cannot understand where this parasite has appeared from so quickly but I suspect that, unless urgent action is taken, the trees will begin to die with major consequences to the environment.

I beg, therefore, that the appropriate authorities investigate this problem and that something is done before it is too late. Jamaica is a magical island and we must not allow it to be damaged.

I am etc.,
