STETHS, Black River clash
published: Thursday | October 16, 2003

WESTERN BUREAU:

TWO PLACES in the inter-zone round will be at stake this afternoon when the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup continues with three rescheduled games.

Former champions St. Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Black River will square off in a big Zone E clash in Santa Cruz while Christiana need only a point from their game against Zone G contenders Holmwood Technical.

The game at Santa Cruz will attract most attention as the teams are closely matched in the standings and both need to win.

Black River are in second place on 24 points and will complete their schedule today while STETHS are on 21 points and have a game in hand against Newell, which will be played only if they avoid a defeat today.

Munro won the zone on Tuesday after a 14-0 mauling of Balaclava to amass an insurmountable 28 points.

A win for Black River would eliminate the 1999 champions STETHS but a win for STETHS would force the playing of the game against Newell which STETHS would then have to win by a large margin as Black River presently lead them by six goals in that category.

The Merrick Morrison-coached Christiana, who lead Zone G with 18 points, can get into their first inter-zone round with a point against Holmwood, who are also in the hunt along with Spalding.

Meanwhile, Brimmer Vale, who will take part in their first inter-zone tournament, clinched the top place in Zone K yesterday after edging fellow qualifiers St. Mary Technical 2-1 to finish with 19 points and will contest Group 5 in the next round.

In another game, Dinthill whipped McGrath 5-1 in Zone J.

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

Zone J: McGrath 1 Dinthill 5

Zone K: St. Mary Technical 1 Brimmer Vale 2

TODAY'S GAMES

Zone E: Munro vs Maggotty, STETHS vs Black River.

Zone G: Holmwood vs Christiana.

Games start at 3:30 p.m.
