published: Monday | October 27, 2003

By Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

FIFA president Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter will arrive in Jamaica on November 16 to break ground for Jamaica's football Training Centre and Academy, according to sources close to the Jamaica Football Federation.

Blatter, along with his entourage, the source added, will arrive in Jamaica by private jet on the morning of November 16.

He will attend the ground breaking ceremony in the morning in Portmore where the facility is to be built.

In the afternoon he will be a special guest at the football double-header set for the National Stadium.

"I cannot make any revelations until after an emergency executive meeting to be held in Ocho Rios on Saturday," JFF president Captain Horace Burrell said when asked about Blatter's visit.

TRAINING CENTRE

At that meeting the details of the Training Centre and Academy will be outlined. Jamaica number among 26 countries approved for funding on October 14 at a meeting of the GOAL Bureau in Doha, Qatar. The GOAL Project FIFA was set up by FIFA to assist poorer countries in their football development.

Jamaica's request for assistance has been on FIFA's file for close to two years. At the time of the approval Burrell expressed his happiness and said that they hoped to move swiftly in getting the centre constructed.

In his many speeches about the facility, Burrell said that it will provide the right environment for the preparation of national teams ahead of international tournaments. The JFF is expected to get US$400,000.
