Three Canterbury suspects charged
published: Tuesday | October 28, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

FOLLOWING THE extended gun battle between members of the security forces and gunmen in Canterbury, St. James, two weeks ago, three suspects who were among 25 men detained, have been formerly charged.

Police have identified them as 20-year-old Delano Taylor, alias 'Judge', O'Neil Cooper, 20, also called 'Blacks' and Junior Jackson, 19, alias 'Nevada', all of Upper King Street, Montego Bay, St. James.

Reports are that the men were charged after they were pointed out during an identification parade held last week. All three are charged with shooting with intent and wounding.

Further reports are that another group of detainees were scheduled to appear on an identification parade yesterday. However, the demonstration which affected that part of the parish, caused it to be postponed.

The charges against the three arise out of the October 15 gunfight in the tourist resort, during which three alleged gunmen were shot and killed and three members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) shot and injured.

The lawmen were identified as Corporal Franklyn Hunter, who was shot in his left arm; Constable Wilbert Hunter, who was shot in the buttocks; and Constable Lori Nelson, who was shot in the chest. The three have since been released from hospital.

LATER IDENTIFIED

Police later identified the three alleged gunmen who were killed in the stand-off as Ronald Young, alias 'Reds', Chander Lewis, alias 'Chef' and Jerome Johnson, also called 'Romie' and 'Mad Dog'.

In the aftermath of the gun battle, eight illegal guns, including five high-powered weapons, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, in addition to a quantity of ganja were found in the community.
