Clarendon, Cornwall sitting pretty
published: Thursday | November 6, 2003

WESTERN BUREAU:

CLARENDON COLLEGE and Cornwall College stayed on course for a place in the semi-finals of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup competition after yesterday's second round of the quarter-finals.

ON TOP OF GROUP ONE

Everton Blake scored for Clarendon College as they edged Seaforth 1-0 in the feature game at Dinthill Technical and recorded their second straight win to stay on top of Group One with six points.

Frome Technical moved into second place with Seaforth, both on three points, after a 4-0 thrashing of Dinthill at Brancourt.

Errol Bryan scored twice for the Westmoreland team as they moved ahead of Seaforth on goal difference with Seaforth to play on Saturday.

Two teams in each group advance to the next round.

Cornwall College maintained a slim lead atop Group One after battling to a 0-0 draw with Titchfield at Drax Hall.

The Dr. Dean Weatherly-coached Cornwall are on four points, one more than Holmwood who bounced back from an opening-round loss to edge Munro College in a hard-fought game at St. Elizabeth Technical in Santa Cruz.

Holmwood made the best of their lone chance in the game as Dwayne Smalling scored in the 57th minute against the run of play as Munro dominated the match.

Smalling was well placed to punish the only real mistake by the Munro goalkeeper, Duvan Brown, who failed to hold on to a shot and the diminutive forward powered it into the unguarded goal.

INSULT TO INJURY

To add insult to injury Munro will be without inspirational captain Donald Simms who was sent off late in the game for a crunching tackle on Holmwood's Ricardo Miller.

With one round to go on Saturday, six teams are still in with a chance to take the four spots as Munro and Dinthill are virtually out of the running as they are yet to score a win in the quarter-finals.
