THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to agree with Mr. Burgess that the use of the English language in our country is sadly deteriorating on a daily basis. Little wonder that our children, through no fault of their own, are failing to do well in English in GSAT and other examinations. The speaking of English is a custom more honoured in the breach than in practice.
English is seldom spoken at home, or anywhere for that matter. We seem to pride ourselves in glorifying patois, even in the media, and what a difficult exercise it is to read a passage written in patois.
Some are even advocating writing the Bible in patois; that would be a day! No one would read the Bible any more.
Patois has its place; for those of us, bred and born in Jamaica, using it for communication sometimes is alright but I don't think it should go beyond that.
Let's help the children to do better in English by writing more compositions, reproductions, etc. It will take a little more time to correct, but believe me it will help them. Improper use of English is a major handicap both within and beyond our shores. Mr. Burgess, you struck a good note; I hope others will follow. Anyway, next time please don't mix poetry with prose.
I am, etc.,
