THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN A time when policemen in Jamaica are being blamed for doing their jobs well, I want to tell the public that there are good policemen on our streets.
On October 23, 2003 I had an accident on Spanish Town Road (in the vicinity of Six Miles) and my car became disabled. It was after 8:00 o'clock in the night. I was alone and did not know what to do, so I sat in the car trying to weigh my options.
After a few minutes no other motorist came to my assistance but Sergeant Dennis Ballen of the Elleston Road CIB stopped and offered help. He was determined to get myself and my motor vehicle away from an area that he considered a 'dangerous place'. He called for a radio car to assist, and while we were waiting, he single-handedly worked on the car to free the wheel so I could move the car to a safer place. The radio car came and they piloted me to the Ferry Police Station where I left the vehicle and my husband came to pick me up. He saw me through the whole ordeal to the point of safety and I am very grateful.
One of the things that struck me was how security conscious he was, and although I felt safe that he was there, he never became lax for one moment, as a matter of fact, I had to be equally alert to watch his back while he was helping me.
I am using this medium to say a big thank you to you Sergeant Ballen and may God bless you as you keep up the good work! Be encouraged to know that the majority of Jamaicans still think very highly of our police force.
I am, etc.,
CAROL MAXWELL (Mrs.)
