Lie detectors needed from top to bottom

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WELCOME the proposed introduction of lie detector tests for the police. In its bid to stamp out corruption the police hierarchy may impose the test on officers seeking promotions or re-assignment to 'sensitive areas'. This will undoubtedly lead to a reduction of instances of conflicts of interest and self serving promotions. This is a bold move by The Commissioner and hopefully it will, after being adopted and proven, be used on a wider scale.
The wider scale that I draw reference to is our leaders and government officials. From the Parish Council level, to the Prime Minister should be subjected to the same, or even more stringent tests. If we wish to stamp out corruption then it has to be done at all levels, the highest included. After all, should not our elected officials be the ones with the least to hide? Hopefully when their day comes they will be clamouring amongst each other with shouts of 'me first'.
This type of transparency, although not a panacea, will placate at least some of the sceptic populace and bring back some confidence in our Government, regardless of who is in power. So if it is to be lie detector test for cops then adopt the same principle and lead by example. Test yourselves too! We await the results.
I am, etc.,
