ON TUESDAY night the fabulous and the fashionistas (ARE WE COINING A TERM HERE, OR SHOULD WE USE FASHIONALBLE?) turned out for Jamaica AIDS Support's (JAS) Wine and Cheescake Fashion Auction on the lawns of Jamaica House in St. Andrew. The event was put on to garner support for Jamaicans living with HIV and AIDS. The show began at 6:00 p.m. with a selection of delectable white Chardonnay, red Merlot and non-alcoholic wines.
These were served with delicious strawberry, passion fruit and strawberry cheesecakes. White chairs were set out in rows on the well manicured lawn, where people either sat and talked or mingled in the area surrounding the delicacies. The setting was very nice - until the rain sent many scurrying for shelter under a large tree left of the stage.
It was from there that many enjoyed the show. Norma Brown-Bell, the evening's compere, did a lot of coaxing to get the swimsuit bidding going. Bidding started at $500, going up in the same increments, which was more than a bargain for those present as many of the outfits would often cost over $2,000.
OUTFITS
The bidding pattern was the same for all the other outfits, which were contributed by prominent Jamaican designers and fashion houses. Outfits were donated by Stonewear Designs, Kamit Revisited, Wright Style, Les Campbell, Elan, Angella's, The Right Stuff, Spunk and The Mushroom, the last two contributing swimsuits.
Also available at a low cost were calendars and candles made by people living with AIDS. Guest models Michelle Lecky, Michelle Moodie, Dr. Saffire Longmore and Ayesha Richards were some of the beauties who gave their services to JAS. Jamaica AIDS Support is seeking the public's assistance in providing school supplies for children, non-perishable foodstuff, toiletry and cleaning supplies, linen and house supplies, medication and learning and recreation material.
