THE EDITOR, Sir:I HAVE written to voice my opposition to the policies of the Police Commissioner in the past. It's only right to speak up when his policies are heading in the right direction. Reforming the police force is a welcomed and positive step; specifically, holding leaders accountable for what goes on under their command. Corruption and unrestrained use of force by the police are practised only by a few in any police force but these are things which affect the whole.
The absence of leadership and accountability spreads mistrust in the community and disrespect by the criminal elements. Attentive commanders know who the corrupt and brutal officers are in their command and know that they can be held accountable for these officers' actions. Let's hope that they will be proactive in sending the no-tolerance signals.
I encourage the Commissioner to stay engaged with the people, listen to their complaints, and be aggressive in addressing them. It's just as important that he does not lose touch with those he leads. He must support them, and hold them accountable at the same time.
The Jamaican people have a role to play too. They must step up and assist in the policing of their own communities. Support the police when they need help and not be afraid of the few that would intimidate. In this, they can find their strength in their numbers.
