THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RECENT article concerning the demise of the car rental business in Jamaica cannot be blamed solely on the upsurge of private ownership of cars. The downturn in this business is based on the exorbitant prices charged to rent a car in Jamaica.
KEEP THIS INDUSTRY AFLOAT
Firstly, in my opinion it's returning Jamaicans who keep this industry afloat because when we come home we don't want to be riding on the public bus. Tourists on the North Coast or in Kingston do not rent cars.
The crux of the matter is the rental cost. On my last visit I rented a Suzuki SUV for 10 days costing me US875.00 plus I had to deposit on my credit card US$1,800 dollars as security it's crazy.
The amount of money to rent a car in Jamaica you can buy a car in Brooklyn.
I am now, together with several of my friends, in the process of sending down a car to keep in Jamaica for driving purposes when we visit. Everything is out of whack cost-wise in Jamaica. How the people survive to me is a miracle.
When or where will it end, this pressure-packed cost rip-off for everything?
I am, etc.,
