Sour grapes?
published: Friday | December 19, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CONGRATULATIONS TO Cliff Hughes' on his well-deserved award from the Press Association of Jamaica. I note with interest, the sour grapes resting on Stephen Vasciannie's stomach re his friend Mutty Perkins. As much as he advocates for Mutty's recognition by the PAJ, I must ask whether Stephen is not in fact lobbying for his own journalistic recognition as well.

Stephen sees Mutty as the "father" of journalism where "technical presentation, analysis and communication skills are concerned". Clearly, he perceives Mutty's rancorous and acidic style as something to be emulated and admired. No doubt, Mutty has long gotten over being disappointed for non-recognition by the PAJ, but evidently his journalist "son" has not.

Tongue-in-cheek I think of the scriptures. "The fathers have eaten the sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge."

I am etc.,
