Maritime security confab for January 13
published: Tuesday | January 6, 2004

THE SHIPPING Association of Jamaica (SAJ) in collaboration with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) and Security Administrators Limited (SAL) -- the main provider of security on the Port of Kingston -- will stage a maritime security seminar on Tuesday, January 13, to sensitise stakeholders of the implications of impending international security requirements.

The seminar is to take place at the Knutsford Court Hotel at 16 Chelsea Avenue in St.Andrew and targets exporters, importers, haulers, wharf operators, shipping agents, freight forwarders, providers of security and all persons in the public and private sectors who provide service or conduct business at local seaports.

THEME

Under the theme: "The Challenges of Compliance with New International Security Measures", the seminar seeks to provide a forum for discussion of issues relating to the International Maritime Organisation's International Ships & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code which takes effect in July and has serious implications for trade with, among others, the United States. Other topics to be addressed are trends and developments in drug trafficking as well as the issue of terrorism, the Business Anti-Smuggling Coalition (BASC) Initiative in Jamaica and coastal security in Jamaica.

Resource persons are drawn from various private sector agencies including the PAJ, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), the United States Embassy and the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ). Louis W. Sealy, Chief of Port Security in Barbados is also expected to participate. There will also be special demonstrations of security devices, cameras used to inspect the hull of ships; methods of concealment in containers; mobile X-ray equipment and anti-narcotic canine services.
