Market repairs stall, again
published: Tuesday | January 13, 2004

By Rayon Dyer, Gleaner Writer

ST. ELIZABETH:

THE LONG-AWAITED repairs that have been promised on the Black River Market in St. Elizabeth will be delayed a while longer.

This is because the St. Elizabeth Parish Council is still awaiting a response from the Ministry of Local Government, the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) and other sponsors for funds to carry out the projects.

This was disclosed at the monthly general meeting of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council at the agency's meeting room in Black River on Thursday, January 8.

Ken Roy Stewart, the superintendent of Roads and Works of the council, said technical advice has been ascertained from Patrick Wong, the chief technical officer in the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sports about the type of repairs urgently needed at the facility.

"The technical aspects of the work have to be completed before the actual work can start," he said. "On the other hand, we are still waiting on funding from the various agencies to which we have applied, among them are JSIF and the Local Government Ministry."

URGENT REPAIRS

He said the key areas to the market that are being considered for urgent repairs include the covering of the drains which surrounds the market, the sanitary conveniences and the meat section of the facility.

Secretary manager of the council, Opal Deharie, said a meeting which was recently organised by the agency with the vendors of the market was successful. It witnessed the co-operation of most of the vendors, who are also eager to have the market satisfactorily repaired.
