Reducing the Cabinet
published: Monday | January 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I SUPPORT the call for Prime Minister P.J. Patterson to seriously consider a reduction in the size of his cabinet. Additionally, several of the advisor and consultant posts should be abolished.

In my view, the new Cabinet should look something like this:

Ministry of Justice/Attorney-General with Senator A.J. Nicholson as the minister; Health & the Environment, headed by Mr. John Junor; Labour & Social Security with Mr Horace Dalley in charge; Ministry of Finance & Planning with Dr Omar Davies as minister until a suitable successor can be found.

Ministry of Local Government & Community Development remains until local government reform takes meaningful effect, at which time it is abolished. Dr. Paul Robertson should be the new minister.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade remains with Sen. Delano Franklyn as the new minister; Education, Science & Technology to be headed by Sen. Noel Montieth; Commerce & Industry, consolidating the portfolios of tourism, agriculture, entertainment, mining & energy, and possibly sports, with Ms. Aloun Assamba in charge; Ministry of the Interior, comprising land, water, housing, and transport & works, with Dr. Peter Phillips in charge; and

Ministry of National Security with Ms. Portia Simpson Miller as the new minister.

I am, etc.,
