THE EDITOR, Sir:
I READ with shock and dismay the situation regarding the inmates at the infirmaries in the island. I would have thought that the Parish Councils under whose portfolio the infirmaries fall would by all means assist these unfortunate persons.
I am making the following suggestions with a view that some form of assistance will be meted out to these unfortunate citizens. They are certainly our brothers and sisters.
The churches within the areas of the infirmaries should make an effort in consultation with the matron as to their assistance, which could be in the form of preparing meals, bathing, cleaning and even washing their clothes. This would serve a very deserving purpose and could be done on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis as the case may be.
The Members of Parliament and even the Councillors should make a pledge from their allocation or salary to assist these infirmaries, even once per year. I know from time to time the business sector assists in situations like the above, hence if each and everyone of us care for the less fortunate, I know we can help in whatever way possible
Let us try for the year 2004.
I am, etc.,
