WHAT WAS supposed to be a happy occasion for Paul Flemmings and his three young children almost turned into a tragedy yesterday afternoon, following a motor vehicle accident on the Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard, near Harbour View in Kingston.
Mr. Flemmings, accompanied by two friends and his three young children, was driving his red Datsun pickup to a family reunion in St. Thomas when the vehicle was rammed in the back by another vehicle.
"The van then spun around in the road and overturned. Within a split second, the first thing that came to my mind was, what about the kids. When I saw that they were alright I was overjoyed," said Mr. Flemmings, whose grey T-shirt was dotted with specks of blood. He and the two other men in his pickup sustained minor bruises.
The children were taken to a nearby medical centre.
According to eyewitnesses, the white Nissan Sunny motor car which had run into the back of Mr. Flemmings' van, had crashed into a metal post along an embankment by the side of the road. The driver reportedly got out and attempted to run away but was chased by a bystander who had been assisting Mr. Flemmings and his colleagues.
During the chase, a third vehicle with a group of men aboard drove up and attacked the bystander stabbing him several times. The driver of the Nissan Sunny was picked up by the men who then made a U-turn and headed back to Kingston.
The bystander who had been chasing the driver of the motor car was taken to hospital by persons from the nearby community.
A police sergeant who spoke with The Sunday Gleaner at the accident scene, said the police were trying to establish the ownership of the Nissan Sunny car and whether it was reported as a stolen vehicle.
