Underhanded movements in Western St Mary
published: Monday | January 26, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RECENTLY THERE have been some underhanded movements in the constituency of Western St. Mary to elevate Michael Belnavis to the position of constituency caretaker at the expense of Mayor Robert 'Bobby' Montaque when Hyacinth Knight steps down.

I wish to state on behalf of numerous residents of Western St. Mary, the Carron Hall division in particular, that we will have none of this foolishness as no 'outsider' will be foisted on us by the dictates of Belmont Road. It is no secret that Mrs. Knight and Mr. Montaque do not "take tea" but that is a personal issue and should not interfere with the issues of western St. Mary where politics is involved.

There is no better person to represent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) than Mr. Montaque and he is qualified in every way to lead. This was the only person who represented the party in the Parish Council for 13 years and did a splendid job, even well known PNP supporters have told him that he is in the 'wrong party'. Despite numerous 'well funded' challenges from PNP candidates in Local Government election over the years the closest contender was 52 votes short.

Delegates in the constituency are being wooed with various 'promises' to give their support to Mr. Belnavis but I would advise them to resist such attempts. I know that Mr. Montaque has the best interests of the people of St. Mary at heart and he should be given every opportunity to excel at the Member of Parliament level when the time comes which is the next General Election.

If the JLP wants this seat it must be cognisant of the fact that 'Bobby' is the way forward in the new dispensation.

I am, etc.,

DUDLEY I.H.

McFARLANE
