Campbell wins 200m
published: Monday | January 26, 2004

FORMER WORLD Junior sprint double champion Veronica Campbell, in her first individual race of the season, topped the 200 metres field at the Razorback Invitational track & field meet held at the Randal Tyson Track Complex on Friday.

Running for the University of Arkansas, Campbell, a former national sprint champion, sped to a 23.28 clocking to capture heat one, which was the fastest in the time-final event.

On her way to victory, Campbell, a former Vere Technical athlete, left behind former G.C. Foster College athlete Marsha Dawkins in the same heat. Dawkins, representing Oral Roberts University, was timed in 25.47 which gave her an overall placing at 12th.

It was Campbell's second outing in the last 11 months after being sidelined by a hamstring injury she suffered while running for Barton County Junior College towards the end of the 2003 indoor season.

Last week Campbell, the Commonwealth Games 100m silver medallist, produced a sensational 51.89 for the second leg split, the fastest of the meet, to help her team to second in the 4x400m relay.

In the men's 200m, Omar Brown from the University of Arkansas finished third in 21.33. The former Albert Town student, who won heat two, finished behind team-mate Tyson Gay (20.73) and Wallace Spearmon Jr. (20.89).
