THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE to commend the writer of the letter entitled 'True Freedom and Moral Obligations' which was published on Tuesday, February 10, 2004. He asserts, "If we plan to function as a free society, every Jamaican must recognise that his deeds are not done in an ethical vacuum but in the context of moral obligations."
It is heart-rending to constantly hear that crime and violence in our society is escalating. And it is quite obvious that the politicians and police personnel, after so many attempts, have failed miserably in coming up with solutions. There are already a lot of critics on the call-in programmes on the radio, but where are the available people, willing to be used by God as changing agents to contest the corruption facing us? Where are the pioneers?
How can parliamentarians expect God to move mightily when the only time some of them remember Him is at the Prayer Breakfast. There can be no progress without change, and to think that we have taken it on to ourselves to assist Haiti without first rectifying our own moral and economic problems. Apart from the Government, some of our parents are at fault for the deterioration of morality and values in our society which have resulted in the increase in crimes. Some women in particular, condone the illegal activities performed by their spouse and/or children. And they are the same ones that cry out for justice when it is time for them to be punished.
Jesus Christ came to give mankind liberty, so why do you remain enslaved? Life in general is not easy, so mankind should never choose hell after this life of 'pure hell'. Jamaicans, arise for your light is come, start standing up for righteousness and holiness. God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called; because in the midst of the pandemonium He is still seeking worshippers who are committed to keeping their love with Him alive, this is progress.
I am etc.,
