A Jamaican Fidel Castro?
published: Thursday | February 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RE THE headline, "Forbes Gets Death Threats": Anyone who did not see the likes of this forthcoming is, like the Government, short-sighted and totally inept.

Personally, I am so disappointed in the execution of the duties of the Minister of Security, among others, that I am now believing that the Jamaicans abroad who have, and are changing their minds about returning to Jamaica, are correct in doing so.

When Phillips took over from KD Knight, there was a roar of enthusiasm, but where is the manifestation? Phillips has consistently given us hints that the crime in Jamaica is being driven by criminals in high places. This is really no secret, but what have you done, Mr. Phillips? How many more eyes have you got to turn blind to the crumbling of Jamaica? To whom are you listening? Can't you hear Jamaicans calling for action, or are you on the threshold of creating another masterpiece of Cuba under Batista or Haiti under Duvalier?

What more can I say? It now seems we need a 2004 Jamaican Fidel who will leave no stones unturned in eradicating the leeches who suck the life-blood from Jamaica.

I guess the Government is looking forward to another natural disaster to initiate the rebuilding of Jamaica, while Patterson, Phillips, Davies & Co. frolic, and Jamaicans scorch.

I am, etc.,

VINCENT WHITE
