THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS I watch the unfolding of recent events surrounding the financial woes of Audley Shaw, I cannot help but feel a sense of hopelessness for Jamaica's future. Coupled with the financial problems of his mentor, Eddie Seaga, the recent exposure of the financial dealings of Audley Shaw's business have left Jamaicans to think long and hard about the possible alternative to the PNP administration.
The manner in which both of them have managed their personal businesses may have many Jamaicans counting their blessings for not entrusting the business of the country in their hands. One shudders when you think as to what might have been, had the people voted differently in recent general elections.
Mr Seaga's company collected the people's taxes and did not turn it over to the Government. Mr Shaw's company wrote several bad cheques to business associates. If Mr. Seaga or Mr. Shaw had conducted business in like manner in the United States, they could be facing criminal charges.
Like Mr. Seaga, M.r Shaw has refused to remove himself from a key leadership position, when remaining might be detrimental to the performance of their respective organisations.
Audley Shaw has constantly highlighted the various mishandling of public funds by the present administration, hence it is rather disappointing to find that Mr. Shaw himself is not immune from accusations of financial improprieties in the conduct of his business.
I am, etc.,
