Government to pay $billion to contractors
published: Monday | March 1, 2004

THE MINISTRY of Transport and Works promised last Thursday to pay, over the next few days, almost a billion dollars it owes to contractors on Government projects islandwide.

The commitment was made following a meeting with representatives of the Incorporated Masterbuilders' Association of Jamaica, the Ministry of Transport and Works, and the National Works Agency (NWA).

According to the IMAJ, the Transport and Works Ministry has "agreed to pay all or most of the outstanding sums by Friday, March 5, and to use the next 21 days to review all projects being done by the ministry in order to determine how and when their completion will be financed."

The parties have agreed to work closely to have all oustanding work completed in the shortest time and to avoid the circumstances which had led to the existing situation.

The IMAJ complained recently that its members were owed substantial sums on road contracts and that non-payment of the money was almost crippling their operations.
