Dry spell hits 'St Bess' farmers
published: Saturday | March 6, 2004

Rayon Dyer, Gleaner Writer

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

A DRY SPELL has hitting sections of South St. Elizabeth for several weeks now.

The Ministry of Water's Rapid Response Units have been trucking water to affected areas but many farmers are still without water.

Bull Savannah farmer Osbourne McCarthy told The Gleaner recently that due to the severity of the drought, farmers were considering to cease production at the end of this month.

"We get little or no rainfall down here during this time of the year... We can hardly afford to buy water to do farming, therefore the majority of the farmers in this area will lose most of what they planted," he said.

Claude Taylor, a farmer from Flagaman in south St. Elizabeth, said he was also having difficulties and that it was likely that he would lose some of his crops. He produces watermelon, tomatoes, carrots and other fruits and vegetables.
