'Something looming on the horizon'
published: Wednesday | March 10, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE FACT that students in the age group 17 to 19 years of age are not advancing beyond secondary School level is an indication of something looming on the horizon. It is an indication that our poor will remain poor, further creating a wider gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. It is also an indication that the powers that be have lost touch with the things that make a nation great.

They have lost touch with what are the fundamental rights of their people. The right to food, housing and an education that will foster nation-building are rights that cannot be compromised. It is an indication that the once rising literate nation is slowly slipping back into illiteracy. It is an indication that our nation will not be equipped for the challenges of the 21st century.

It is an indication that in years to come you will have a minority ruling a majority. This can only lead to the ruination of a nation. One does not have to look very far to see the situation as it exists in Haiti.

I am, etc.,
