Claudia Gardner, Gleaner Writer

LUCEA, Hanover:

IAN 'CHALKO' Wilson, 33, cultivates agricultural produce for more than just economic gain. He simply loves to till the soil.

Wilson cultivates okras, cabbage, coconuts, sweet peppers, bananas, callaloo and sugar cane on his three-acre property in Spanish Hill, three miles west of the town of Lucea.

LOVE FARMING

"I grew to love farming," he said. "I used to go to 'bush' (the farm) with my grandfather who taught me how to how to plant seeds and how to tend for them."

Mr. Wilson who reared broiler chickens at one time, plans to resume that practice very soon and he is also interested in starting an apiary.

He is of the view that enough young people are not interested in farming. "These young guys don't want to farm... but it is better to farm your own food," he said.
