THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM replying to a letter written by a Canadian in the Wednesday, March 17 Gleaner. The writer despaired about her recent visit to Jamaica.
The following reply was sent to her:
"I am pleased to hear that you visited Jamaica and ventured into our beautiful Blue Mountains. However, I'm sorry that you were only able to document your negative findings. Were there no positive ones? Was this your first visit to this island? Did your travel agent advise you? Did you do any research on Jamaica?
Each person's/couples' holiday experiences are different. I'm sure many Winnipeggers would not agree with your comments. I have travelled through Europe, the Orient, North & South America and the Caribbean. I found places that were ugly, crowded, dirty and had many aggressive people. As a matter of fact I just returned from two weeks in another country where I too saw emaciated dogs and goats. I did not consider it a blight on my host country. I lived in Northern Manitoba from 1973 to 1999 talk about garbage, despair and hopelessness!
When I first saw the filthy state downtown Winnipeg was in I was surprised, coming from pristine Toronto as it was then. When asked why, I was told Winnipeg is a 'windy city'.
Our excuse a poor economy and lack of civic pride in some people.
Jamaica has many problems as many of her long-time visitors will attest to. Get to know her and her people. You do not have to be afraid of them.
Do not pay for what you did not ask for, if you are being offered what you do not want just say no! I was harassed in Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. I just said 'no' and moved along. Have you never been to those countries?
I am retired now and live here again. Do visit again. I would be glad to host you and your husband in my home.
Finally, I'd not say "Jamaica, no problem" (not true)
I'd say, "Make it Jamaica again".
I am, etc.,
