Cop's trial set for Friday
published: Wednesday | March 24, 2004

By Nagra Plunkett, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE TRIAL of the police corporal accused of assaulting three American tourists at a Negril night-club in Westmoreland last Tuesday, is set to continue in the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The case that started March 19 was further put off after getting off to a late start Monday.

The accused policeman, Corporal Calvin Antonio, 39, had his $70,000 bail extended when the part-heard matter went back before the courts.

His trial began last Friday with testimonies from the three complainants.

The policeman is accused of physically assaulting Jessica Senecal, 22, and two other unidentified 'springbreakers' at the Jungle Nightclub, where they were partying at about 3:30 a.m. on March 16.

Reports are that the corporal made provocative advances towards Ms. Senecal, a university student from Kentucky. She reportedly resisted his advances and a heated argument developed during which she was allegedly assaulted.

The visitor claimed that during the argument the lawman became violent and kicked her in her stomach and then proceeded to douse her with an alcoholic beverage he was drinking. She said that when her companions came to her defence, they were also roughed up by the lawman.

Corporal Antonio, who is officially attached to the Manchester Division, was arrested and charged following investigations by the Bureau of Special Investigation.
