published: Friday | March 26, 2004

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

DEFENDING BOYS' champions Kingston College took over sole leadership of the 2004 ISSA/VMBS Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the end of yesterday's second day at the National Stadium.

The boys from North Street strolled to the top of the points standings, despite a gallant attempt from Morant Bay's Wilbert Walker to keep his team on top.

At the end of day two and after four finals, KC lead with 31 points. They are followed by St. Jago (23 points) and Morant Bay, the JNBS/Eastern Champs champions (21).

Mannings (13), Bridgeport (10), Jamaica College (10), Wolmer's (9.50), Campion (nine), Calabar (eight), St. George's College (seven) and Herbert Morrison (seven) complete the top 10.

Walker, who has won two gold medals, is the most outstanding athlete of the meet to date. He won the long jump Class One on Wednesday's opening day before returning yesterday to retain his heptathlon title, securing 5,198 points for victory.

Walker won the event ahead of St. Jago's Leonard McLeggon (4,861 points) and Hickel Woolery of Mannings (4,448).

MORGAN WIN DISCUSS

In the discus Class One final, Fabian Morgan took over from former teammate Kimani Kirton to win the event with a throw of 51.88m. Steve Hammond of St. Jago (46.12) and Camoi Hood of Bridgeport (46.03) finished second and third.

Making headway in the boys 800m Class One with the fastest time is Carlington Morgan of Knox (1:53.94). Morgan leads Shevoun Plummer of Norman Manley (1:54.84) and Jermaine Clayton of Bellefield (1:56.29).

In the 100m Class One, St. George's College has the fastest time (10.72) going into the semi-finals. One can expect two hot semi-finals as KC's Andre Wellington (10.80), Manchester's Nester Carter (10.89), Holmwood's Arnaldo Elliott (10.93) and Wolmer's Matthew Palmer (10.96) have also advanced.

In Class Two, JC's Winston Barnes (10.86), Camperdown's Renaldo Rose (11.14) and Garfield German of Calabar (11.18) are the top athletes going into today's semi-finals.

In the Class Two semi-finals scheduled for today, Orville Riley of Calabar (49.44) leads Holmwood's Romel Lewis (49.73) and Sandor Ponnicott of Camperdown (50.34).
