G.C. FOSTER College's Kadine Geddes shone on the first day of competition of the Inter-Collegiate Track and Field Championships at G.C. Foster yesterday as she leaped to a record 6.42 metres in the female long jump to break the old record of 5.65m done by Charleta McNab in 1997.
Geddes' victory, along with that of her former schoolmate Denise Hyman in the 800m in 2:17.6 has pushed the defending champions to an early lead after two finals. They lead with 30 points with the University of West Indies on 19 and the University of Technology on 12 following behind.
In the men's section, the home team has also taken the lead over defending champions University of Technology as they lead with 49 points with UTech on 40 and they are followed by Portmore Community College on 10 and Exed on nine.
MAJOR UPSET
There was a major upset in the male 800m as the Stephen Francis-coached Evan Allen led from start to finish to win the event in 1:50.0 as favourite Jermaine Myers of G.C. Foster College had to settle for bronze as his teammate, Shawn Smith, took silver in 1:51.2. Myers finished in 1:51.3.
It was a 1-2 for UTech in the men's long jump as Herbert McGregor (7.40M) won gold ahead of teammate Damion Anderson (7.07) with Exed's Germaine Jackson taking bronze with 7.06m.
In the other men's final, defending champion Shawn Silvera of G.C. Foster retained his title in the shot put with a throw of 15.90m to beat Arthur Turner of UT (14.97m) with G.C. Foster's Ricardo Page taking bronze (14.30m).
