Kiwanis Club of New Kingston honours heroines
published: Sunday | April 4, 2004

By Chester Francis-Jackson, Gleaner Writer

Four Women of Excellence Awardees of the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston show off their well-earned citations. They are (from left) Hilary Phillips Q.C., President of the Jamaican Bar Association; Jean Lowrie-Chin, Managing Director of PRO Communications; Madge Shirley, Executive Director of Hagley's Auto Limited and Mitchell's Supplies Limited; and Minna Israel, Deputy Managing Director of Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

MY DEARS, if y'all have not yet seen a copy of the 2004 Ebony Soul Calendar, then rush out to your closest neighbourhood bookstore and avail yourselves of a copy. This is one of international photographer Anthony Ragland's best yet!

Doves, the calendar was shot on location here on this fair isle and features a collection of Nubian Godlings that is so fierce, it is simply a must have and then some, so there!

Anyway, and mercifully, all is not lost, as indeed, the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston, in its wisdom, has been quietly applauding quite a number of usually unsung heroines in an annual to-do that really started a number of years ago.

POWER-PLAYERS

This noteworthy affair actually began as a champagne power-luncheon last Tuesday, under the auspices of Veuve Cliquot Grand Dame Champagne, and was for years, thee social event as, on this occasion the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston, used the opportunity to honour a number of women, who in the mind of the adjudicators, were not mere bystanders, but power-players in the overarching scheme.

Those honoured were from differing fields from across the length and social breadth of the island, whose contributions have set them apart from their peers: Banker Minna Israel; Public Relations Practitioner Jean Lowrie Chin; Legal Luminary Hillary Phillips, QC; and Businesswoman Madge Shirley.

Luvs, it was an august body of personalities, personages and the crme de la crme of the professional and social spheres that gathered last Tuesday evening at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, for the annual Kiwanis Club of New Kingston installation ceremony, that saw the above mentioned four icons, being honoured and inducted into a body, already quite pregnant with the bounties of the achievements of its members.

Doves, the affair was one of those, fabulous to a Tee, and so hot, people are still talking!
