Road safety - a two-pronged effort
published: Tuesday | April 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHILE IT is good for the authorities to implement systems to force motorists to obey the traffic laws, the ruling authorities should also make sure that road safety is a must for motorists and pedestrians as well.

Non-functioning stoplights at intersections jeopardise lives of road users each and every day. Lack of pedestrian crossings and signalling have proven to account for lost lives. The zeal with which the authorities have to punish motorists should be the same zeal the authorities have to provide safer roads for everyone.

Let this be a message to the authorities. Improving safety on the roads has to be a two-pronged effort. While the "Hi-Tech" ticketing system is a good move in the right direction for forcing motorists to obey the law, there should also be a concerted effort to ensure that the basic road safety tools are in place and functioning at all times.

The collection of revenues from ticketing should be secondary to protecting lives.

I am, etc.,
