Justice system a failure
published: Monday | April 26, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM very concerned about the increase in vigilante killings. These actions demonstrate the lack of confidence the Jamaican people possess in the formal justice system to deal justly with criminals. While not offering an excuse I can remember incidents at the U.W.I. campus where thieves were caught by students and handed over to the police but were later released without prosecution. Among the reasons offered for this was inadequate jail space at neighbouring police stations.

However simple petty crimes may appear, there must be a feeling by the victim that justice will be served.

Vigilante killing cannot be condoned, but the government must ensure that the Jamaican people feel that prosecution by law will be swift and just or chaos and anarchy will result!

I am, etc.,
