THE EDITOR, Sir:
WITH THE tragic death of little Shakara Harris behind us, we must ask ourselves if her death was in vain. We must learn from this heartrending incident and take the necessary steps so as to not repeat this mishap, not only in other schools, but for pedestrians in general.
I must bring attention to the lack of a pedestrian crossing on Old Hope Road, outside the gates of Jamaica College. That road is phenomenally a death trap at the best of times, as motorists release their misguided skills on the straight stretch of road.
However, many 'obstacles', like students of J.C. and Mona High, maybe a broken down vehicle, or a bus stopping to let off persons without pulling into the allocated spaces provided for them, tend to hamper their dexterity, resulting in grim consequences.
Watching these J.C. and Mona High students making their way from one side of the road to the other is chilling, as they bob and weave between speeding vehicles.
This habit of practising crisis management has got to stop. Let's not wait for the inevitable and create a safer environment for our students amidst the tumultuous existence they are forced to bear in their youth.
I am, etc.,
Mrs. C. YOUNG
