THE EDITOR, Sir:
HAVING JUST read the citation to Dr. Herbert Eldemire C.D. in today's Gleaner (April 22) where he was the prime mover in the founding of so many institutions for the benefit of the health of our nation, I am surprised that the National Honours and Awards Committee had not conferred at least the Order of Jamaica on this outstanding individual.
Having been chairman of the Dental School committee for a number of years, I had many meetings with Dr. Eldermire with a view to establishing a dental school in Jamaica. At one party at Jamaica House he remarked, "If Leo sees me on my way to heaven he will be asking me for a dental school."
Dr. Eldemire invited Drs. Gladstone McDowell, Victor Chensee and myself to lunch one day, and told us that Sir Alexander Bustamante had instructed him to tell us that they could not afford a dental school at that time, but that he should go ahead with the establishment of the Dental Auxillary School and asked for our impact.
I might add that Dr. Herbert Eldermire, as a minister of Government, was most approachable at all times.
I am, etc.,
LEO MARCH C.D.
