Redevelopment of downtown
published: Sunday | May 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir;

CAN WE the humble, hard-working people of Jamaica kindly ask our powerful superpower neighbour to lead the launch of the re-development of downtown Kingston?

The re-location of the United States Embassy to downtown Kingston is a necessary step in the right direction.

The level of infrastructure necessary for a First World organisation such as the embassy is just what a dilapidated downtown needs to return to its former glory.

The critics will argue that the U.S. embassy needs a more "uptown" location.

To this end I invite these critics to drive along Marcus Garvey Drive and observe the decay of the once beautiful gardens on the built-up pavement.

Then please drive slowly past the section in front of Petrojam. The re-development of this particular area of the entire Marcus Garvey Drive speaks volumes as to the power of re-development.

I must commend the members of corporate Jamaica for their commitment to downtown Kingston, and I invite investors both local and foreign to rebuild downtown to its former glory.

As an objective to work toward may I kindly ask that these committed investors seek to build international hotels and entertainment facilities with the World Cup Cricket 2007 as the short-term goal.

I am , etc.
